Betsy DeVos, education secretary, is a reformer. Before she married Dick DeVos, who is part of the Amway legacy, she was intent on reforming the world. For instance, at Calvin College, then Elisabeth Prince began her vocation. She became involved in campus politics. It is a vacation that has challenged her, but never stopped her from succeeding. That was more than 30 years ago before she was married and raised children.
Mrs. DeVos has done more than most who call themselves politicians. For instance, she led campaigns, political action committees and party organizations. In fact, she spent six years as the chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party.
Mrs. DeVos has Always Looked for Innovative Solutions to Problems Facing Society
In one of her many successful endeavors, Mrs. DeVos served as Windquest Group chairman. The Group is a privately held company that invests in clean energy, manufacturing and technology. She founded the firm, along with her husband, in 1989.
One of things she’s cherished most about being a political fighter is her roles at various non-profits. For instance, she worked as chairman of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She’s been a member or multiple local and national boards such as the Mars Hill Bible Church, Foundation for Excellence in Education and Kids Hope USA. With all her work in the nonprofit sector, her most well-known role is as a leading advocate for educational choice.
Education school choice is an opportunity for low-income students attending underperforming schools to attend private schools with the help of school vouchers. Mrs. DeVos served as chairwoman of the Alliance for School Choice and American Federation for Children (AFC).
Mrs. DeVos Took the Education Secretary Position to Help More Students
In Michigan, her hometown, Mrs. DeVos worked hard to secure a better education for students. She even created a scholarship foundation to provide low-income Michigan students with educational choice vouchers. That wasn’t enough. Mrs. DeVos wanted to do more than provide money and her time to improving students’ lives. She wanted to make lasting, more far-reaching change to improve students’ lives. It is why she took the position of education secretary.
Washington, D.C. Politics has Made Her Stronger
Mrs. DeVos has always been a tough political opponent. In Michigan, she’s won plenty of political battles involve steering tax money toward charter schools and school vouchers. However, Washington, D.C. politics has made her even stronger. She had to fight her way into winning her confirmation as education secretary. It was a tied until President Pence cast his vote. She’s had to deal with accusations, gossip and criticism about her education views, her job as education secretary and her wealth. None of that matters to Mrs. DeVos. She’s focused and committed on being the best education secretary and assisting student education.
As a Michigan republican operative once said about Mrs. DeVos, it is not a smart move to try to cross her. People in Washington, D.C. who try will find out. Opposition only makes her stronger. It emboldens her. She is great at power play politics.
